A Weekend for Contemplating Pumpkins (10/17-10/18)

Posted by Dave Fratello on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 at 3:33am.

We finally have a Fall weekend with virtually no new open houses.

It was bound to happen after a month or more with plenty of new offerings. Therefore, we're going to change the subject a bit below.

The only debut open house we see in the list this week is 3400 Pacific (3br/2ba, 1150 sq. ft.), once noted here at MBC for the unusual pitch mentioning 4 missed mortgage payments (see "Why Wait for the NOD?"), now at $899k. Open Sun. 1-4pm.

Click here for the complete list of opens published in the Beach Reporter, or at any time use the link from the "Property Search Tools" pull-down menu in the top navigation bar.

We'll still ask you to report back on what you do, or don't, like that you do see.

And now...

The Pumpkin Races Are Back!

That's right, next Sunday, Oct. 25, one of MB's quirky, unique and profoundly local events is returning to downtown MB near the pier.

This is extraordinary, because the city cut off funding (underwriting the costs of street closures, etc.) earlier this year due to budget constraints.

Hearty kudos to the organizers, who could have shut down or headed back to residential streets east of Sepulveda. They did not. They drummed up new sponsors and turned the World Famous Pumpkin Race into a charitable event benefiting local schools' education foundations.

They also improved the racing options to deal with the main problem for recreational racers – an unpredictable race schedule. Now anyone can poke a couple of axles through a pumpkin and race an unlimited number of times, at any time, on a second track, almost all day. (The "championship race" remains a single-elimination competition running all day on the main track.)

To take advantage of the unlimited racing, the race sponsors ask for a $15 entry fee, a portion of which goes to the local education foundation of your choosing. The championship competition remains free. Kits are for sale for those of us who can't find a couple of axles and extra sets of wheels out in the garage.

If you have no idea what we're talking about, brush up on:
Check out the official website for the pumpkin races, start your engineering and decoration planning (if you haven't already), and get ready to roll!

UPDATE: Thinking about racing next week, but don't have a team? Register for the MB Confidential team, raise money for the MB Ed Foundation, and help MBC get mention as a sponsor! More details Sunday/Monday!
