Weekend Opens (3/25-3/26/17)

By Dave Fratello | March 25th, 2017

It was just another morning Saturday as a group of local elementary school students, teachers, parents and volunteers gathered at Mira Costa's football field.

The mission: Launch a balloon 100,000 feet high.

They did it! About 2 1/2 hours after launch, the balloon hit 110,000 feet somewhere above the mountains near Palm Desert. Its payload (cameras, experiments, etc.) crashed back to earth... in the Salton Sea!

More details & video to come later via our sister site, DigMB.com. If you'd like to see (short) video from a similar balloon launch by Meadows Elementary last year, use this link to virtually rise up into space for a minute.

Balloons rising from Manhattan Beach to 100,000 feet... there are no obvious real estate analogies to draw, are there?

Our video this week begins with one new listing that's not open publicly, a huge, custom and fun home at 1431 10th ($3.898M), a Hill Section remodel at 939 1st, walkstreet cottage at 400 9th and more:

Some mobile users and email subscribers will need to use this link to view the video.

Sand Section

400 9th Street Manhattan Beach CA400 9th (3br/1ba, 1025 sqft.) is a prime flat family walkstreet lot with a cute but dated cottage now.

There's so much debate among the walkstreets as to which is best. (Possibly it's the wrong question!) Visit this one, stand on 9th and see if you can answer for yourself.

From the official description:

"Sitting a few blocks from the sand & strand and just a short distance to downtown comes this charming 3 bedroom, 1 bath home on one of the most desirable flat walkstreets in the highly sought after Sand section of South Manhattan. This home sits mid-block and as you enter the gate from the walkstreet you are instantly relaxed by the sun-drenched patio surrounded by mature trees- the epitome of life at the beach! Flooded with character and lots of natural light this impeccably well-maintained home boasts tons of soul. Enjoy front and back patio’s for some rest and relaxation. There are endless possibilities as this home is the perfect canvas to make yours."

400 9th starts at $3.799M and is open Sun. from 1-4pm.

Hill Section

939 1st Street Manhattan Beach CA939 1st (4br/4ba, 2950 sqft.) is a fairly spacious 1990 build with some upgrades. It would appear to be a lot for the money (under $3M) in the Hill Section. One reason for that is the smaller lot (about 4000 sqft.). From the official description:

"[T]his bright and airy home was thoughtfully built in 1990. Walls of glass capture ocean and sunset vistas from spacious public rooms and fill this sophisticated home with natural light. French doors open to a private rear balcony, providing intimate spaces for outdoor entertaining. Double entry doors welcome guests into a formal tiled foyer with two-story high ceilings. A lovely wood staircase leads up to a beautiful living room and inviting dining area with two fireplaces, soaring ceilings and French doors. Panels of glass capture the glorious outdoors and a cozy loft is the perfect spot to watch a romantic sunset over the ocean. The gourmet kitchen is a chef’s delight with its large center island, granite counters, Wolfe cook top, stainless steel appliances and a walk-in pantry. Open to a breakfast area and family room with fireplace & bookshelves, this is the heart of the home, ideal for casual entertaining and quiet relaxation. Four bedrooms & four full bathrooms grace this delightful home, including a private master suite, with walk-in closet, warmed by a tiled fireplace."

939 1st starts at $2.749M and is open Sat. and Sun. from 1-4pm.

East MB

1509 Magnolia Avenue Manhattan Beach CA1509 Magnolia (3br/2ba, 1350 sqft.) is a recently remodeled, if smallish, cottage with all today's styles. From the official description:

"Charming, cheery, light and bright, this remodeled single family home sits on one of the best streets in East Manhattan. Walk to schools and Manhattan Village. Three bedrooms and Two baths with two living areas and a dining room. This home has been refreshed, renewed and re-imagined in 2016 and is in absolute move-in ready condition. The kitchen features new high end SS appliances, newer cabinets, marble counters and a pantry. The bathrooms have been tastefully updated. This home lives a lot larger than the square footage. It flows nicely, highlighted by the indoor/outdoor living experience that is so sought after. The sunny west facing back yard features built in BBQ and dining area that is easily accessible from the family room and kitchen via updated sliding doors."

1509 Magnolia starts at $1.649M and is open Sun. from 2-4pm.

1550 11th Street Manhattan Beach CA1550 11th (4br/3ba, 3325 sqft.) is a 1980s house with some upgrades to countertops etc., plus a pool. That's a nice use of the big yard on one of these 7500 sqft. lots. More from the official description:

"Impeccably maintained home with amenities such as upgraded cabinetry, double microwave and wall ovens, built in subzero, pantry, breakfast nook, formal dining room, wet bar, two fireplaces, 4 bedrooms including large master suite with balcony plus an office, lots of cabinet& closet storage, zoned heating and air conditioning, laundry room, security system, three car garage, and a backyard entertainment center with pool, spa, bar, dining area and fire pit.
