Grand View Elementary School

Grand View Elementary School is one of five public elementary schools in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, serving grades K-5. Located on 24th Street and Grand View Ave., it primarily serves residents of the Sand Section and Tree Section neighborhoods in the upper northwest portion of the city. Its boundaries include the El Porto neighborhood and Rosecrans to the north, Pacific Avenue to the east, Valley Drive through downtown Manhattan Beach, and Manhattan Beach Blvd. to the south.

Grand View, which opened in 1939, is one of the oldest schools in Manhattan Beach. Its 14-acre campus is built into a hillside. A major new construction and renovation effort (funded by Measure C, approved by Manhattan Beach voters in 2016) has been underway at Grand View to expand and modernize its building and playground. The school currently serves approximately 500 students.

Grand View prides itself on its mission to create a stimulating, innovative, enjoyable, and supportive environment to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of all students. The school earned the California Distinguished School recognition in 1995, 2010 and 2014. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2015. According to Greatschools.org, Grand View has an overall rating of 9/10 with test scores rating 10/10.

Grand View is also known for its forward-thinking environmental programs. The school earned national recognition as one of the first-ever U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools in 2012 for its innovative efforts to reduce the school's carbon footprint. Other special programs at Grand View include its "Makerspace" program to provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build, invent, and learn as they deeply engage in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) principles. Makerspace offers students an opportunity to investigate and tinker in a collaborative environment that encourages open-ended creativity and problem solving. The school has also implemented a "Character Counts" program to teach citizenship, as well as adopting the "Mind Up" program to teach children techniques to manage stress.

The Grand View “Gators” also run the popular Grand View Gator Run each year in May. The 5K race benefits the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation and draws runners from all Manhattan Beach neighborhoods and schools.
