Meadows Elementary School
Meadows Avenue Elementary School is one of five public elementary schools in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, serving grades K-5. Located on Meadows Ave. in East Manhattan, it primarily serves residents of East Manhattan, east of Sepulveda and north of Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Meadows is one of the smallest elementary schools in Manhattan Beach, with approximately 400 students. Its mission is to help every student reach their full academic, social, and emotional potential at all levels. Along with its 16 general education classrooms and two resource rooms with two full-time special education teachers, Meadows is unique in that it is home to a classroom dedicated to students who are deaf and hard of hearing. This classroom serves deaf and hard of hearing students from across the MBUSD district and beyond.
In 2023, Meadows was named a California Distinguished School. It also earned the title of California Gold Ribbon School in 2016. Meadows earned an 8/10 ranking from GreatSchools.org, with a 10/10 ranking for test scores.
Meadows uses a Response to Intervention (RtI) approach to provide for strong classroom teaching combined with defined levels of intervention at every grade level. This approach identifies students who require intervention, and offers resources and ongoing assessments used to monitor progress and communicate with parents.
Meadows teachers are also trained in MindUP™, a neuroscience-based program, in which students learn to self-regulate behavior and mindfully engage in focused concentration required for academic success. MindUP™ lessons align with all state standards including Common Core and support improved academic performance while enhancing perspective taking, empathy and kindness, as well as fostering complex problem solving skills.
Meadows is also known for its “Meadows Cares” Committee to create a safe and welcoming school community for all students. The committee coordinates multiple festivals and events throughout the year celebrating such holidays as Holi and Chinese New Year. Meadows also jointed Mira Costa AAPI Club in honoring the Uyematsu family, the original owners of the land on which Mira Costa High School now sits.
