Robinson Elementary
Robinson Elementary School is one of five public elementary schools in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, serving grades K-5. It is located on Morningside Drive. in the southernmost part of Manhattan Beach’s Sand Section. The school primarily serves residents who live west of Sepulveda and south of Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Robinson Elementary was originally known as Morningside School. It was later named after Opal Robinson, who began teaching in the district in 1926, was the first principal of Grand View Elementary, and served as an assistant superintendent until she retired in 1959.
Robinson, known as the “little school by the sea,” is by far the smallest elementary school in Manhattan Beach. It is a top priority at Robinson for all students to feel safe and have a strong sense of belonging. Robinson values teaching inclusion, social-emotional learning, and a growth mindset as part of a comprehensive educational experience. Robinson is proud to have earned the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate designation over several consecutive years. Through NPFH, they help students appreciate and celebrate differences and empower them to become effective allies. They also use the Playworks recess program to foster inclusion, teamwork, and sportsmanship through structured, engaging games that every student can enjoy.
Robinson was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2013, a California Distinguished School in 2014, and a California Gold Ribbon School in 2016. It earned a 9/10 rating from GreatSchools.org, with a 10/10 rating for test scores.
Robinson is known for its active parent-teacher association, which raises thousands of dollars each year through various fundraisers. It is also known for its innovative programs including a dedicated Makerspace, Music and arts program, science lab, physical education, library, engaging assemblies, and field trips.
In 2019, longtime Robinson 4th grade teacher Kim Holz was named a California Teacher of the Year.
