We're coming up to one of the signature weekends of the holiday season in Manhattan Beach. And there's a real estate tie-in as well.
Before we look at the short term, let's also talk about the MB Yuletide 5K coming up Saturday, Dec. 21, at 5:30PM. This is one of two great local runs each year that start and finish under the pier, out along the wet sand at a super low tide.
The Yuletide 5K is notable for the glow necklaces, jingle bells and costumes that runners don. It's a unique and very local event, which is why MB Confidential is proudly sponsoring it. (As we did last June's race.)
There are kids' races also, and edible medals. Register today, and we'll see you out there!
Also, here's a link to the 5K's Facebook page.
Coming up this weekend, beginning Friday, is the Sandpipers' Holiday Homes Tour.
This year there are 4 residences in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa to check out. Each year the group picks out homes that are already quite nice and loads them up with swanky holiday décor. It's always a good afternoon, and for a good cause.
Click here to visit the Sandpipers' site about the tour, or here to get a quick glance at the 4 homes being featured this year, or go directly to this link if you're itching to buy tickets online right now. (There are plenty of places and people around town who can get you tickets without the added online fee.)
And last but not least, let's talk about blowin' stuff up. Fireworks, to be specific.
The MB Holiday Fireworks show at the pier starts with a bang at 7:00PM on Sunday.
But that's only the capstone on the day. There's a snow park, bouncy park and music down by the pier beginning at 3:30PM. The first act is the local Dixieland favorite, the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders.
The downtown streets are closed and become thronged as the hour of fireworks approaches, so come early and claim your spot. (We've always been partial to watching from the sand.) Bring something to keep you warm – inside and out – as temps will be in the 50s.
This year there's also something completely new – the MB fireworks are on TV.
It's not a live broadcast (as some have inferred), but a program featuring the 2012 show in a "competition" against Niagara Falls, NY. Last year, we were told this program would be called "Christmas Showdown," and they actually ran a second fireworks show last year for the TV cameras in hopes of helping MB win.
What they shot has now been slotted as part of "Jingle Brawls" on Sunday on the Travel Channel. If you'll be out, set your DVR. (Local broadcast time is 4:00PM in HD, not the 7:00 you'll find in other media – we confirmed this with the network. HD channels: Verizon FiOS (670), Time Warner (869) and DirecTV (277), readers to verify.)
We're told there will be some kind of online voting associated with "Jingle Brawls," and once that info is up we'll post voting info at least on the MBC Facebook page, and on our "Weekend Opens" post if the info is available by then. This will be a tough fight, given the epic waterfalls Niagara has against us. Are you ready to (virtually) rumble?
Not sure what all the fuss is about with MB's downtown snow, music and fireworks fun? We found this very nicely produced video by Civic Couch setting the whole scene, a nice reminiscence. Check it out.
