Buyers Go for Homes Evoking 'Somewhere Else'

If you're looking for a Manhattan Beach house, don't you want it to be representative of Manhattan Beach?

Some buyers recently have contracted to purchase homes that, instead, are meant to look like they're from somewhere else. It almost makes Manhattan Beach feel like Disneyland – anything can be here, any place can be here, just close your eyes and imagine...

1412 Laurel Avenue, Manhattan Beach,

1412 Laurel Avenue, Manhattan Beach,  1412 Laurel (6br/5ba, 5700 sqft.) is a custom build advertised as having "Southern charm."

And they don't mean "Southern California." We're talking the historical-traditional South, on the eastern edge of the USA.

To emphasize the point, the home's patio was built with bricks imported from South Carolina.

We've got bricks here, ya know!

The home is extremely pretty, and uses details that do seem timeless, rather than 21st Century Manhattan Beach, so we're taking it that the illusion is effective. (Hard to say, as our own visits to the South have been limited to occasional work trips to Atlanta [no damage done], North Carolina's Outer Banks [is North Carolina the South? discuss...] and one wild weekend on a farm and at a football game in Knoxville.)

This one was asking $7.399M and is in escrow.

1412 Laurel is listed by Tara Klein, Vista Sotheby's International Realty.

713 29th Street, Manhattan Beach,

713 29th Street, Manhattan Beach,  713 29th (4br/4ba, 2800 sqft.) is a super unique proposition, a main house plus a rear unit in an ultra-prime Tree Section location.

The artifice here: The home's meant to feel like a mountain cabin, and, per the listing, is "[a]ffectionately nicknamed 'Tahoe at the Beach in the Trees.'"

Is it too late to work on that name? A delete key might help. How 'bout just "Tahoe at the Beach," and let people find out it's in the Tree Section?

AH – alas, the ink is dry. And they're under contract, the home scooped up within a week, asking $3.195M.

There is some tradition of "mountain cabin" homes in the Tree Section, as well as other parts of town. Not too long ago (or was it?), we saw a wood-paneled home heavy with pine cabinetry and brick and all that sort of vibe described as "Big Bear at the Beach." (It was in the Trees, too, but they stopped short of saying so.)

Wait till people found out how awful the skiing is here in MB.

1012 Pacific Avenue, Manhattan Beach,

1012 Pacific Avenue, Manhattan Beach,  1012 Pacific (6br/8ba, 9278 sqft.) is a custom Hill Section build on an oversized lot (nearly 12K sqft.).

The listing describes it as "Nantucket-inspired," while in-person, one of the listing agents described it as evoking The Hamptons.

Which is it? These are two similar, but different worlds, 100 miles apart by sea – not to mention 3,000 miles from here.

Pick your adventure.

One way or the other, 1012 Pacific certainly brings in a kind of stately East Coast charm, and the sort of understated luxury that attends "wealth that whispers." That notion may be more characteristic of Nantucket than the larger, busier and sometimes more showy Hamptons communities.

This vast, custom home came out asking $16.000M and had a deal in just over a week. You just know the buyer's someone who was raised "over there" and finally felt at home here in Manhattan Beach because of the way this home was styled – as a project for an MB lifer, we might note.

1012 Pacific is listed by Christa Lyons and Matt Morris, Pacifica Properties Group, Inc.
