Nothing's Safe on a Prime Lot


In some parts of Manhattan Beach, the land and views become so valuable that any structure is beside the point.

Prime view spots in the Hill Section are especially susceptible. 

The latest example: 904 Highview is now flat land, 28 years after an architectural achievement of sorts.

The (former) custom-designed architectural modern home on the site was built to feature its near-hilltop views of the ocean in a unique fashion, with two spans of living spaces almost entirely framed in glass, and partly cantilevered out toward the western edge of the property.

The project had been officially known as "Sharon's California House II," earning a Residential Architect Design Award in 2000.

Several years later, in 2012, a new buyer acquired the property and set about upgrading it, once again enlisting an architect to modernize the home with appropriate homage to its unique design.

That's how it stood in early 2023, and the home lasted only a couple weeks on the market. A buyer swooped in with $7.250M, just under the asking of $7.499M.

Turns out, that buyer was only really interested in the views, and wanted a new home to take advantage of them.

It's a reminder that change is the only constant now, and that nothing is sacred in a location that big money wants.
